Vehicle description

BMW S1000R

BMW’s big, fiery roadster quickly earned a strong reputation upon its release. It must be said that, being closely derived from the RR supersport, the S 1000 R already possessed all the DNA to leave its mark on the road with a serious dose of adrenaline. A real knockout, especially since the machine boasted a wealth of technology. Now, with Euro 4 regulations in place, the German roadster not only adapts to this standard but takes the opportunity to revitalize itself and raise its sporting potential a notch. The S 1000 R is all about heart and much more.

A powder keg, even closer than before to a potent spark. The design of the S 1000 R leaves no doubt about its character. BMW, however, has shown caution (as usual) in refining the lines of this naked missile. No question of shocking the eyes; the average motorcycle enthusiast has become accustomed to this silhouette. To that crooked face just waiting for a mood swing to headbutt you; to that brute profile tamed by metal; to that quintessentially German expression of strength. The designers were only allowed to subtly tweak the side panels and the passenger seat. The only way to quickly identify this evolution is by the exhaust. The S 1000 R is equipped with a larger, more prominent, and beautifully crafted exhaust. A titanium piece from Akrapovic, sprinkled with carbon fiber elements and bearing the HP logo. It’s bulky, but it looks the part.

Whether calmly poised to unleash its power or speeding towards a full-throttle battle, the machine stands firm, a threat without provocation, patiently waiting to feel the onslaught crash down upon it so it can laugh in its face. The S 1000 R has had the power to deliver since its inception. Its vigorous 4-cylinder engine has benefited from new regulations, gaining 5 horsepower. And just like that, the fury gauge jumps to 165 hp. Enough to quench the thirst of adrenaline junkies. But also for those whose mornings are measured in moderation and afternoons in high-voltage bursts. This engine, borrowed from the S 1000 RR, is equally adept at being pleasant and practical for everyday riding, with generous access in the lower rev range – as it is at being ferocious and explosive at high revs. A refined and powerful machine, capable of dancing the waltz, techno, and hardcore. It loses a tiny bit of torque, 114 Nm instead of 115; negligible. As a bonus, the sound has become deeper, complementing its muscular character. The icing on the cake? The S 1000 R has shed 2 kg, tipping the scales at 205 kg.

Lightning, and a host of rider aids, can help to channel it. We’ll get to that later, but let’s focus on the chassis that will absorb the stresses. Also derived from the RR, the main frame has evolved somewhat since the previous generation of the roadster. A similar design, but with a lighter rear section, a reworked frame/swingarm assembly for greater precision and rigidity, optimized flexibility, and improved traction. These changes necessitated a redesign of the foot controls.
This should further boost the S 1000 R’s performance. If you want to make it even more aggressive, a pair of HP wheels (2.4 kg lighter) is available as an option. Speaking of which, there’s also the optional Shift Assist Pro, allowing for clutchless upshifts and downshifts.

Let’s not linger (but let’s not stray too far) in the options section, it’s too tempting, and let’s see what the bike offers as standard in terms of electronics. ABS, of course, mandatory and a long-standing BMW staple, is included here in a Race version. Also included are ASC traction control and two riding modes: “Road” for standard riding and “Rain” for tricky conditions. For new features, you have to go back to the options and select the “Riding Mode Pro.” This gives you access to a sporty “Dynamic” mode and the new “User” mode, which is configurable.

This “Pro” package also includes cornering ABS Pro, launch control, a configurable pit lane speed limiter, and DTC dynamic traction control. In short, a significant upgrade from the S 1000 RR.
BMW has taken the opportunity to slightly tweak the instrument cluster to improve readability and refine the handlebar mounts for reduced vibration.
